Althea’s wealth of legal experience goes unmatched in Townsville’s field of commercial lawyers, having worked 35 years in both private practice and the public sector.
Immediately prior to starting with Keir Steele Waldon Lawyers, Althea held the position of Director of Legal Services with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
Throughout her time at GBRMPA, Althea was responsible for all of the legal requirements of the Authority. This often involved advising on and implementing changes to the Great Barrier Reef Act 1975 and Great Barrier Reef Regulations 1983.
Althea’s role also extended to negotiating and concluding commercial agreements, including consultancy and lease agreements. Althea was involved in negotiating and concluding the first Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) to which the Commonwealth was a party in, in Australia over an area of GBRMPA.
Althea’s time in public sector also provided her experience in directing legal proceedings in the Federal Court and delivering training on relevant legal issues such as administrative law, legislative drafting contract negotiation, etc.
Within private practice, Althea is well versed in all manner of property matters such as commercial conveyancing and leasing, easements and compulsory acquisitions of land. Althea advises on issues under the Privacy Act 1988 including the management of litigation in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Federal Court.
Althea has provided high level advice to government agencies on governance processes and procedures, and conflicts of interest. Althea also provides general contractual advice on contracts and other agreements. Althea is also well equipped to provide advice to North Queensland based Local Authorities and property developers on interpretation and application of pertaining Planning legislation and Planning schemes.
